Update: When the Universe Clears Its Throat

As I shared in our previous post, Michelle is a Honey Badger, and everything was going along swimmingly.

Chemotherapy done – check.

Surgery one in the books with an astonishing recovery – check.

The final piece was the minor surgery number two slated for February. Wrap it all up with a tidy bow and onto the post-C phase of life.

Fade to black. Roll credits.

And then the universe cleared its throat…

When they removed two lymph nodes during Michelle’s mastectomy, they found microscopic cancer in one of them.

Microscopic. Not visible on any scan.

Every scan indicated zero lymph node involvement. The surgical team was surprised. “Shocked” was the word they used. Not a word you want to hear from people who work under your hood for a living.

And normally, that little surprise sends you straight to another surgery. Lymph node dissection. Bigger surgery. Longer recovery. Then radiation. Then more drugs.

Basically, the extended director’s cut for a movie you never wanted to see in the first place.

A GOOD twist you say?

Michelle’s case went to something called the Tumor Board. Yes, that is the actual name. Imagine America’s Got Talent, but instead of has-been celebrity judges you have a bunch of brilliant doctors staring down pathology slides. No Howie Mandel. No buzzers. Just people who really know their shit.

And that entire panel voted against the lymph node surgery. Unanimous. They decided the cancer detected was at such a microscopic level that radiation could do the job without putting her through the risks and side effects of another major operation.

In a somewhat rare instance, the Tumor Board said, “Nah, she good.”

How’s that for a fucking holiday miracle, eh?

So, now the plan shifts. Michelle starts radiation the Monday after Christmas. She will also begin immunotherapy and a drug protocol that the cool kids on the street call Chemo Lite (minimal side-effects, and NO COLD CAPPING needed). Eleven months of that. The full grand tour.

Which means this chapter doesn’t close in February after all. Final reconstruction will likely land in September instead. Not what any of us wanted, but if the choice is between another surgery or a smarter path that gets her the same result with fewer long-term problems, we will take the smarter path every day.

Michelle is steady. She is resilient. Hell, she makes the rest of us look fragile.

And we are still here, all of us, walking with her toward the finish line even if they decided to add a few miles at the last minute.

Thank you, everyone, for everything.
