Chemo Can Suck It

It’s official: Michelle has completed her sixth and final round of chemo.

Hell. Yes.

Quick note: The finish line took a slight detour. Michelle’s last treatment got pushed back a week thanks to low platelets — totally standard chemo nonsense, and nothing that affects her overall prognosis. Just a frustrating delay, an emotional faceplant, and a logistical kick in the crotch when it comes to surgery planning. We’re still aiming for the November 4th surgery date, but things may shift depending on how the universe (and her blood counts) decide to behave.

That being said, she made it through all six rounds like an absolute badass.

She was strong.
She was steady.
She was smiling (most of the time).

Let’s recap the highlights (or lowlights, depending on how you look at it):

  • Fatigue? Yep. Some. Manageable.
  • Metallic taste in her mouth? Oh yeah… enough to make normally delicious meals taste like they’d been soaked in loose change.
  • No nose hairs? Sadly yes. Combine that with fall allergies and you’ve got a drip situation worthy of its own TikTok account.
  • Caught a cold between Rounds 5 and 6? She sure did — which is a big freakin’ deal when you’re immunocompromised. But did she complain? Barely. Which is especially impressive when you consider how I act with a minor cold and a fully functional immune system.

But through all of that…she just worked the plan and carried on. True Honey Badger energy.

What’s Next?

Michelle will take the month of October to rest and recover and enjoy a much-needed pause before the next phase.

Surgery is (tentatively) scheduled for November 4th.

After a lot of thought (and spreadsheets, and late-night pros/cons lists, and conversations with
women who’ve walked this road, and weeks of indecision), she’s decided to have a single mastectomy with reconstruction, and she finally feels at peace with that decision. I mean, she doesn’t want ANY of it, but this option feels like the right choice for her.

Unfortunately, she can’t get it done in one fell swoop, so it will take place in two phases – one in November, some time to recover and a follow up surgery in February.

Even better news? Unless something surprising shows up during surgery, she will almost certainly not need radiation. That was a huge unknown for a long time, and we’re breathing a little easier knowing it’s likely off the table.

My Last Cold Cap Rant

If I never see another cold cap again, it will be too soon. I’d rather eat a urinal cake from a porta-potty on the last day of Lollapalooza than strap one more of those frozen medieval helmets onto Michelle’s head again.

We did it.
It worked.
And I am done.

We’ll post another update after surgery. In the meantime, we’re just letting this moment land. The last few months have been surreal, brutal, and beautiful in ways we’re still unpacking. But for now?

Chemo’s in the rearview.
Michelle’s still standing.
And yeah… cancer still isn’t impressing anyone.

Thank you for all of your love and support.

With love,
Stephen (& Michelle)
